After watching the news and listening to all the civil unrest in the country of Kenya, many of you may wondering if Kenya is really safe to visit yet? The answer is “yes” and “no”. Our team has missionary friends in Nairobi who have informed us that the political/violence scene is stable in the large city but elsewhere outbreaks of violence and protests are still taking place including Kisumu, the town we would have to get supplies in if we were going to Kodera. Our Koderan contact Christopher has substantiated these feelings and advised us not to take a large team to Kodera (the original plan). Instead our small team will meet with our Kodera contact in Nairobi, staying there to teach and transfer supplies. All this said, we will keep a close eye on the situation and make a final decision closer to our departure date. Even if God closes the door for travel this year, we plan on going to Kenya in 2009 making any efforts made this year very beneficial and much appreciated!

Have you heard the news about the recent election conflict and subsequent violence in Kenya that has resulted in over 1000 deaths and the internal displacement of over 350,000 Kenyan people? The following is a short synopsis of the recent political scene in Kenya:
Prior to changes made in 2008, Kenya was a presidential representative democratic republic, whereby the President was both the Head of State and the Head of Government of a multi-party system. Executive power was exercised by the government, legislative power was vested in both the government and the National Assembly and the judiciary was independent of the executive and legislative powers. However, there was growing concern during former president Daniel Arap Moi’s tenure that executive power was meddling in the affairs of the judiciary.
Before the December 2007 elections, Kenya was one of the more stable African countries despite changes in its political system and crises in neighboring countries. In 1997, a cross-party parliamentary reform initiative revised colonial era oppressive laws that limited freedom of speech and assembly. This reform improved public freedom and contributed to the generally credible national election that took place December 1997.
In December 2002, Kenyans held democratic and open elections, most of which were judged free and fair by international observers. The 2002 elections marked an important turning point in Kenya's democratic evolution in that power was transferred peacefully from the Kenya African Union (KANU), which had ruled the country since independence to the National Rainbow Coalition (Narc), a coalition of political parties.
Under the presidency of Mwai Kibaki (2002), the new ruling coalition promised to focus on generating economic growth, combating corruption, improving education, and rewriting its constitution. A few of these promises have been met. For example,
• There is free primary education starting in 2008,
• Secondary education costs will be heavily subsidized by the government starting fall of 2008
• Kenyans could associate and express themselves without fear of being harassed by security agents (used to be the case during the Moi administration)
Interestingly in November 2005, the Kenyan electorate resoundingly defeated a new draft constitution supported by Parliament and President Kibaki. Kibaki responded by dismissing his entire cabinet and eventually appointed a new slate of ministers.
The last general elections were held on December 27, 2007. President Kibaki under the Party of National Unity (PNU) ran for re-election against the main opposition, Raila Odinga of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). As the counts came into the Electoral Commission of Kenya (ECK), Odinga was indicated to have a substantial lead over Kibaki. However, as the election continued and more votes were counted, Kibaki closed the gap and eventually overtook his opponent by a substantial margin amid largely substantiated claims of voter rigging. This led to protests and riots openly discrediting the ECK for complicity, anger toward Odinga for declaring himself as the "people's president", calling for a recount and Kibaki to resign.
With increasing violence, deaths, the displacement of many people, and no hope of reconciliation, eminent persons of Africa, including Dr. Kofi Annan, were called to Kenya in hopes of brokering a peaceful solution to the political stalemate. In the end, on February 28, 2008, President Mwai Kibaki and Mr. Raila Odinga signed an agreement on the formation of a coalition government in which Odinga would become Kenya’s second Prime Minister. The agreement also called for President Kibaki to appoint cabinet ministers from both PNU and ODM parties. This coalition will hold until one of the parties withdrawals, or the end of the current Parliament, whichever comes first.
Kenyan lawmakers unanimously approved a power-sharing deal March 18, 2008 aimed at salvaging a country once seen as one of the most stable and prosperous in Africa, by bringing together two men, President Mwai Kibaki and opposition leader Raila Odinga, whose dispute over the presidency unleashed weeks of deadly violence.
So is Kenya safe? Yes and No.

Kenya, The Nation
The Republic of Kenya, named after Mount Kenya, is located in East Africa. It is bordered by Ethiopia to the north, Somalia to the east, Tanzania to the south, Uganda to the west and Sudan to the northwest, with the Indian Ocean running along the southeast border. Kodera is located near Lake Victoria in the western part of Kenya. You will not see Kodera on the map as it is a very small community. However you can see Kisumu. Kisumu is the largest town near Kodera. This year due to earlier political unrest we will not be visiting Kodera. Rather we will stay in Nairobi at a guest house compound. Just a refresher, Nairobi is the capital city of Kenya.

Kenya is comprised of eight provinces, each headed by a Provincial Commissioner (centrally appointed by the president.) The provinces are: Central, Coast, Eastern, Nairobi, North Eastern, Nyanza, Rift Valley and Western.
The major cities within Kenya are Nairobi (pop = 2,510,800), Mombassa (pop = 707,400), Nakuru (pop = 337,200), Kisumu (pop = 273,400), Eldoret (pop = 249,100), Nyeri (pop = 213,000), Machakos (pop = 179,500) and Meru (pop = 140,900).
Kenya is the world’s forty-seventh largest country, after Madagascar, at 224,961 square miles (582,646km²). Starting at the coast in Mombassa, the low plains rise to the central highlands which are bisected by the Great Rift Valley; a fertile plateau in western Kenya. Mount Kenya is the highest peak in Kenya at 5,199 m (17,042 ft; second highest peak in all of Africa) and is the site of many glaciers.
Kenya enjoys a tropical climate. It is hot and humid at the coast, temperate inland and very dry in the north and northeast parts of the country. The long rain season occurs from April to June. The short rain season occurs from October to December. The rainfall is sometimes heavy and often falls in the afternoons and evenings. The hottest period is from February to March and coldest in July to August. The country receives a great deal of sunshine all the year round and summer clothes are worn throughout the year. However, it is usually cool at night and early in the morning.
Because of the varied climate, Kenya has considerable land area of wildlife habitat, including the very well known Masai Mara (this is where most TV programs are shot). The “Big Five” animals of Africa can also be found in this area, as well as other parts of Kenya. The lion, leopard, buffalo, rhinoceros and elephant make up the “Big Five”. A significant population of other wild animals, reptiles and birds can be found in the national parks and game reserves in the country. Unfortunately the environment of Kenya is threatened by high population growth and its side effects.
The Kenyan Highlands comprise one of the most successful agricultural production regions in Africa. Primary agricultural produce include tea, coffee, sugarcane, corn, wheat, rice, sisal, pineapples, pyrethrum, dairy products, meat and meat products, hides and skins. Industry production items include: petroleum products, grain and sugar milling, cement, beer production, soft drinks, textiles, vehicle assembly, paper and light manufacturing and tourism.
International trade also exists in Kenya. Primary exports include: tea, coffee, horticultural products, petroleum products, cement, pyrethrum, soda ash, sisal, hides, skins and fluorspar. The market countries for these items are: Uganda, Tanzania, United Kingdom, Germany, Netherlands, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Egypt, South Africa and the United States.
Major imports into Kenya come from the United Kingdom, Japan, South Africa, Germany, United Arab Emirates, Italy, India, France, United States and Saudi Arabia. The products imported include: machinery, vehicles, crude petroleum, iron, steel, resins, plastic materials, refined petroleum products, pharmaceuticals, paper, paper products, textiles, fertilizers and wheat.

I have always had a great love for Kenya! Ever since I can remember I wanted to travel to Kenya, see the people and see elephants in their native environment. My first experience traveling to Kenya was last year when I had the chance to go up north to Karare to collect behavior health data for my masters thesis. Upon arrival in Karare my heart was stolen by Kenya. God opened my heart, my eyes and my soul to Kenya and its people.
I am so privileged to go on this year’s mission trip with PLCC and all the talented team members. I am hoping to learn a great deal from my team members an well as the people from Kodera. Along with my sister Jeanna, we will instruct the teachers of Kodera on computer usage to help them gain an edge on the Kenyan teachers’ mandate that requires all teachers be computer literate in 4 years. We will be working with Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Publisher. I am excited to experience how my love and compassion for Kenya and its people will affect all my new friends in Kodera!

Your trip sounds interesting. I have shied away from most short term missions in recent years because it became "cool" to go on an expensive mission vacation among some protestants. Drove me nuts. We are so excited that Kate North will now be joining us on this year’s trip to Nairobi. Kate will provide co-leadership as she has traveled to Kenya many times. Kate also acts as the President for the newly formed non-profit Mercy Walk (http://www.plcc.org/MercyWalk/Default.aspx) through PLCC.
Kate will, “take a lot of time "being" with the Koderans and learning from them and from Brad. Since I am so committed to this mission, I feel that the continuity of attending the teachings and seeing the people again is very important. I love to learn and I love the people there. God placed Christopher in my life seven years ago and at that time I would never had imagined that I would even travel to Kenya, let alone be this involved. I was so afraid the first time I went and now I look forward to it. God knew I needed to see for myself what was needed and to make it known to me how I could be in service to this village.”

Meet Brad Board
Meet Brad Board. Brad is heavily involved in the Global Missions programming at Pine Lake as well as The Pacific Institute (http://www.thepacificinstitute.com/), where he acts as a project director and is involved in sales facilitation. Brad is an integral part of this mission as he will be facilitating The Pacific Institute Conference in Nairobi a few days before the team arrives. Brad estimates that 300 people will be attending that seminar. While our seminar is much smaller, Brad will integrate the powerful educational tools of The Pacific Institute into our smaller workshop. Brad’s mission experiences have taken him to the Ukraine, Romania, Mexico, Tanzania, and Alaska.
Brad Board acted as a school administrator for 35 years in Minnesota before retiring and moving to Seattle, Washington 4 years ago with his family. He has been happily married for 38 years and has two wonderful kids, Jenna (31) and Brian (29). He enjoys tennis, golf, reading and traveling.
Meet Priscilla Larsen
Meet Priscilla Larsen! Priscilla is the Outreach Missions Coordinator for PLCC and will be our Team Leader for our trip to Nairobi. Priscilla knew she wanted to be a missionary from a very early age as she enjoyed ministering to her dolls every chance she could.
Priscilla became involved with Kodera 7 years ago when she met Christopher Sure shortly after he came to Issaquah to attend a small Lutheran Bible School (LBS). This is what Pricilla said of the meeting, “when I first began talking with him I actually got angry (inside) because of having spent so much money to come here and have one year of schooling paid for, when he could have taken that sizable chunk of funds and gone to a Kenyan school for 4 years! But as I began to understand his heart and passion, I began to think that as we were beginning to rethink our Global Missions' direction for Pine Lake Covenant Church in Sammamish, Washington, we should look into his community as one of our Partnerships. We finally sent a team, and the decision was made.”
The first mission team (of three people) traveled to Kodera in 2001, and this was just the impetus PLCC needed to get us “off the dime” and starting a Partnership in Mission with Kodera. Many wonderful accomplishments have occurred since the first trip to Kodera. Priscilla states, “I have had the incredible experience of watching a community 'come out of darkness and into the light' in the 7 years we have been pursuing our Partnership. Out of this has come a securing of their water system, understanding of health and hygiene, beginning a Certified Seed and Fertilizer Bank, helping them alter their health situation by funding a 3 room clinic that is manned by Kenyan nurses, getting a church started, and finally getting an elementary school going.” All the above initiatives, plus many others, have come from the Health Committee in Kodera. PLCC has responded to these initiatives with funds, encouragement and the sending of teams for this variety of initiatives yearly.
Priscilla is “passionate to see this community become the "city on the hill" that Jesus spoke about in Matthew and that the surrounding communities will see the "light of Christ" through them, and be drawn to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It is happening, and being part of this community is one of the BIG joys of my life.”
Meet Christopher Sure
We are pleased to introduce our Koderan contact Christopher Sure and his lovely wife Florence! Christopher was born the 5th child of 10 (only 8 live today) to a Catholic family but did not come to faith until age 11. Upon graduation from high school Christopher went through a revival of his soul and committed his life to Christ. Now the question: "how would he best serve God so that God could see that he was thankful?" Christopher went to Teacher training college. It was during this time he began to see the plight of his people, and their need for finding freedom in Christ. This understanding propelled him into the next challenge in his life of faith - sharing with all he came near, including his family, about Christ's freedom available to them.
After marriage to his life partner, Florence (they met in discipleship training during college) and the birth of Victoria (their first born), God led him down another avenue in his walk of faith – ministering to youth. During this time it became evident that Christopher would need further education - especially a formal training in Bible knowledge. For 5 years he prayed for this opportunity.
God answered his prayers and with the help of Seattle-ites, Christopher came to Washington and attended LBI in December 1998. He came by faith that God would continue to provide for his needs and his family’s needs back in Kodera.
Christopher attended LBI for almost a year when another couple from Seattle brought him to Pine Lake Covenant Church and introduced him to the Mission Commission. He became a member of the Commission and began the long term partnership between PLCC and the community of Kodera, Kenya.
Again, by faith, Christopher began sharing with us what God was doing spiritually in his community and surrounding communities. And so here we are today, 5 years later, having the privilege of sending another small team to continue helping with community development as a means of bringing the Good News of Jesus Christ to those that do not have a living relationship with our Savior.
Christopher is the primary liaison between Kodera and PLCC. He has put in a tremendous amount of effort to help us get ready for this trip and we are hoping to provide Christopher with other trained community members to help Christopher and the community make decisions in the future regarding our mission trips.

Five years ago our church Pine Lake Covenant (www.PLCC.org) had a simple dream to work with the community of Kodera (in Kenya, Africa) to help improve their living conditions and provide them with valuable resources. The results have been nothing short of amazing! A primary school was build two years ago, the medical clinic continues to save lives and the Word of God is shared and celebrated mutually between us!

This year we, Sisters for Kodera, have the opportunity to give back, to take one small step to bring on a change, to share our hearts with others and to be in service to God! By listening to the needs of Kodera, our team will be traveling to Kenya (7/30-8/10) to host a small workshop with three goals: 1) teach goal setting and strategizing to streamline community efforts, 2) teach basic computer training as required by the Kenyan teachers mandate and 3) celebrate the word of God with our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ.

Discover Kodera 2008 Needs
Ask and you shall receive. Below are the needs for the Kodera 2008 Adventure. Remember that all gifts are tax deductible for this adventure and our deadline was June 30th BUT WE STILL NEED MORE HELP! Donations are still needed and able to be accepted. One act of love...can start a chain reaction. (updated 7/23/08) Sister Missions will be presenting the computer literacy section of the conference. In this workshop, we will instruct Kodera teachers in basic computer use as well as Word, Excel, Power Point and Publisher programs. The laptops will be taken over for use during instruction and given to Kodera teachers for future use. Computers do not need to be fancy. They need to be in working order (monitor, hard drive, keyboards, etc.) with a functioning operating system and have Word, Excel, Power Point and Publisher programs installed and working. We prefer that all personal data from the previous owner be taken off prior to our handling the laptop. Before leaving on the Adventure, we will double check and delete any missed files. Please contact us if you or someone you know might have a laptop to donate or additional questions. All things are possible with God. What better way to ensure the outcome of this adventure is accomplishing God's will than with prayer. We pray but we also need a prayer team here at home to keep vigal during our preperations, the adventure itself and as continued support afterward. Give a Gift
We are blessed with many opportunities to give in just about as many different ways. Not everyone is called, is able or has the interest to GO on the actual adventure. Is your contribution any less a part of the mission than those who travel? No! You are just as much a part of the mission team by providing funding, prayer, supplies, encouraging words, assistance, etc. You are a vital part of the support team.
Imagine a dance company that has only dancers. Not everyone can be onstage or there would be no lights, sound, ushers, food, costumes, coat checks, riggings, etc. It would not be a very successful show.
Thank you for proving the glue and backbone for the adventures listed. Your contribution, holds together, provides support and creates the mobility for the adventure to move forward. Thank you.
